3. Matsui is a great player and a perfect fit for the Yanks. He is focused, hard-working, and polished. Also, he seems to know his weaknesses and tries hard to compensate for them. I hope he plays out his career in pinstripes.

2. Don't forget that Soriano could speak some Japanese - it must have been something to hear those two conversing in the dugout.

". . . and he liked to trade tapes form his extensive library of adult videos with reporters. (His reply, when asked about his eccentric hobby, was a droll 'Doesn't everybody do this?')"

That's almost too funny for words - its nice to see Matsui's humorous side. He's an easy ballplayer to cheer for, and I'm glad it sounds like he's a decent guy.

1. It is about time someone told us something about Matsui the Man. I admire the guy, and wish that managers here would take advantage by learning and practicing some of the attitude that Japanese players have, that would improve the American game.

I don't think he is that young and think he is about as adjusted to NY life as he will get. Are we seeing his peak? Will he improve more? He is an admirable man and a very solid ballplayer.

I wonder if the Yankee players are 'smart' enough to enjoy and take advantage of learning a little bit about the fine Japanese culture. I always though it would be good if the Yanks hired an interpreter, and taught each Yankee a few words in Japanese. Imagine if after hitting a HR and returning to the dugout, each player came up to him, bowed, and gave him a few word compliment in Japanese.

Knowing the type of guy he is, I would think it would not be hard for us to sign him for the rest of his career. I think Matsui fits perfectly into the image of the type of person we want as a Yankee.

It is important for us to develope a 'core' of players for the next 10 years. Jetes, ARod, Cano and Matsui (and probably Giambi for the length of his contract) is a very nice start. They will probably be the only guys on the current team playing in 2008.

Good post Alex!
