OYF, the problem as I see it having experienced it first-hand in last night's game thread, is that nesting might be more convenient for someone coming in after the fact looking to read all related posts, but in the moment it's not conducive to the fast-paced, multi-topic conversations that we tend to have here, particularly during games. Having to scan back over an entire comment thread to look for nested responses and then having to reply to each thread separately takes way too long, particularly when you have one eye on the game and new comments are going up several time a minute. It's my impression that readers are less likely to want to read an old comment thread than they are to want to be able to participate efficiently in a new one, thus streamlining the process for active threads is my primary concern.

I, like you, thought on first glance that the nesting would be an improvement, but having seen it in action on an active thread I've changed my mind and the other commenters in that thread seemed to be in unanimous agreement on the nesting issue. Having both options would only complicate things further. I think we all need to play by the same rules here.

As for the text in the input box, I'll add it to the list of things to address.

[9] Cliff... Another thought.

PS: The text in this input box is now pretty small. Can to increase the size a point or 2?

Lets say there are 500 comments, and 12 are in response to comment [9]. Now I log on and read comment 9. In order to see every one that has replied to it, I have to read the entire thread. This is where nesting is far superior... and offers comtinuity on topics/replies.

However, I always have the option of just positng my reply like:
[9] Heres my reply,
and it will be the last comment posted. (like the 'old' days.

So, if you turn nesting back on, the commenter can choose 'to nest or not to nest'. Now, the only option is ONLY NOT to nest. Also, since comments are now numbered (GREAT), if the last comment in the post ''list' is [422], but a nested comment is [423], well.... at least ya know that when that reply was made. (numbers are a lot easier to digest and remember then clock times)

I would turn nesting back on, but encourage people to use [##] if they like, instead of having their comment nested.

[12] i'm using Firefox on what i think is a PC, also. i just have a little laptop. bottom of the line old Dell. my friend set it up where when my main browser comes up, there are 4 different website tabs atop. one, of course, is bronx banter, but it's the toaster address. do you know how i can change it to where that one tab opens to here? if not, it's all good, i just follow the link from the "movin' on" post at the toaster for now and i'll call my buddy for help...

btw, all the posts just became the color red. i know you guys are doing eighty million things at once in regards to the new site. thanks for workin' with us on the kinks!

Okay. I'm using FireFox on a PC with no issue, but I'll add your concern to the list. As we said yesterday, bear with us. There may be a lot of tweaking going on around here for a while. Just because we change something doesn't mean we won't change if further or change it back. But do please keep the feedback coming. It's very helpful.

Well the whole point of the numbers was that you could link back to the original post by putting it in brackets. Wordpress doesn't seem to have that functionality, so ultimately what's the use of the numbers?

Anyway, I won't argue this point much, just pointing out how the nesting feature seems more intuitive to someone like myself. Toaster was more like "Web 1.0" in its technology, and I'm sure that's why a lot of the older readers were more comfortable with it. Things were straight-forward, flat, and relatively easy to follow.

However there's plenty of sites that use nesting for game threads — bloggingtheboys.com (a site I frequent), for example, has the feature and while there's massive amounts of posts flying around during the games, they seem to manage it all well enough.

River Avenue Blues uses nesting as well, and they get quite a bit of traffic too.

Anyway, as for the dialog box, I'm using FireFox on a Mac — I realize I'm completely in the minority so I won't expect you to labor over it much because of *me*, but this wasn't happening as of yesterday (or even this morning), and it's sort of annoying to post here because of it.

Pete, we concluded after last night's game thread that, while the nesting comments are fun for shorter threads like this one, for the long and rapid-fire exchanges during games it's just too difficult to follow as you have to scan the whole thread to see if anyone's replied to a given conversation.

As for that extended dialog box. That's particularly strange as that's not what my screen looks like. In fact, even the shape of the buttons differs i that screen grab from what I have here. What browser are you using?

Wow, no more nested comments? I actually liked those a lot, and it made replying to someone easier. The numbers thing was a bit antiquated IMO.

Don't try to make it *exactly* like the Toaster, guys — there are definitely some advantages to hosting on Wordpress.

Oh, and can this be fixed, btw:

And I would assume the players on that list would be required a certain # of ABs or appearances at the AAA level?

I didn't see that info anywhere on BA's site... then again I'm not a subscriber. :)

Man, where was that seminar when I was at Rutgers?

Pete, note that Garder's the only one on the list at Triple-A, and that's among the top 20 prospects at that level in all of baseball. Actually, if you ask me, Gardner's not the top Yankee prospect at Triple-A (he's also not at Triple-A in my mind, but the major league starting CF until further notice). I'd probably put Mark Melancon as the Yankees' top triple-A prospect, and Ian Kennedy might still be neck-and-neck with Gardner, if only because he's younger. Also, Austin Jackson will be in Triple-A in '09, so there's more on the way.
