[2] [3]

i followed steve balboni when he was on the royals, too. wow, i'm really surprised that "bye-bye" isn't on his main b-r page. huh.

josh - i've been going back to the toaster just to read C.G. and the Griddle. i used to wear a t-shirt with a middle finger on it -- underneath, it read: "Words Fail Me"!!!

btw, really nice use of "erudite" here - you must be reading the new banter! : )

Josh, do you know what Steve's nickname was? Bye-bye. Bye-bye Balboni. I always thought that was appropriate. Just rolls off the tongue.

Strangely enough, b-r.com's Balboni page doesn't have that listed, though their bullpen page does. It also tells me that Bye-Bye managed in the NY-Penn league in 2001, with the Vermont Expos of all teams. I'm also surprised to learn that Bye-Bye was born in Brockton, MA. I would not have guessed that.

I've never seen a major league player as round as Balboni was. That is somehow also strangely appropriate.

Those were some good days, in their own way, the early 90s. Thanks for the memories, Josh. You're a heck of a writer and I thoroughly enjoy your stuff. I'm glad you had a piece in this series.

Thanks, Just Fair; I appreciate that. I try to keep the middle finger holstered most of the time.

It's not quite the same at Baseball Toaster without the profane yet erudite Yankee hordes from the Banter.

God bless Steve Balboni.

I've been reading your stuff on CG's for a while now but never commented. This, like your other pieces, was a great read. Thanks. I, too, am a big fan of the middle finger. : )
