Considering the tremendous fall Detroit took last year, and factor in how much the poor economy will impact Detroit, I smell a firesale at the ASB. I wonder if Cabrera could be pried loose. Inge is a good idea. I hear Magglio (a FA after this year) could be had.

It's a fine idea, BG, but the Tigers, according to Jason Stark's latest, plan to start Inge at 3B and Guillen in LF with Cabrera at 1B. It's a weird alignment for them when you think about it as compared to the Yanks. The Tigers need a SS and Catcher - Guillen would be no worse at SS than Jeter is with a better stick (though he has a hard time staying healthy) and Inge is a better C than those listed above. But, supposedly, Inge hates to catch.

I agree with Bum Rush that's its unlikely that any of those would be available on a minor league deal. I've been advocating elsewhere that the yankees try to trade for Brandon Inge to serve as a super sub, insurance at C, CF, and a RH bat off the bench. From all I've read, the tigers don't plan to start him and he's an expensive bench player for them given their budget and other needs.

The problem is that Molina is already signed for this year, and I think it's clear that the Yankees aren't about to cast him aside for the 38-year-old Zaun or any of the others on my list. That's why I suggested the mL deal, which would allow a Zaun to co-exist with Molina with Posada on the DL, or with Posada with Molina on the DL (or having finally hit his way off the team). That said, I don't disagree with your evaluation that it may take more than that to land any of these guys.

That's a steep drop-off to Moeller. I'd be very surprised if all of those guys listed above him didn't get major league deals - too many decent teams need decent catchers including all of those teams losing those catchers. It's still the same problem as there ever was - too few catchers for too many teams. Still, I like Zaun the best - he knows the AL East and has the best the OBP of the lot. Supposedly the Yanks were after him two years ago as a free agent. If they're ready with an early offer, he may be willing to sign. For the $1 or $2 million, it's probably worth the guaranteed money of a major league deal. I don't think a minor league contract will get it done with any of those guys apart from Moeller. Too many teams need catchers.
