Go see Reggie at Cardboard Gods. Woweee. How much fun. And better yet, listen to Red Barber call the last of the ninth in Vandermeer's second no hitter.

IIRC, John Smiley and Jason Schmidt both pitched (somewhat briefly) for the Pirates. Smiley might have made the top 20, but I'll bet Schmidt did not.

Another person who definitely didn't crack the top 20 - he was only there for 3 years I believe - is one Rik Aalbert Blyleven.

Blass (17) Law (6) and Phillippe (5)

http://tiny.cc/2q8BV

I don't know if it says something about the state of the Pittsburgh Pirates brand name or what, but its sort of sad that between us, we were only able to name one man in the top five.

I would have to guess Vernon Law is one of the top three. Blass probably is on that short list, too. And then maybe one of the old-time Pirates, someone like Vic Willis or Deacon Phillippe.

[2] My best bets are Bob Walk, Don Robinson and Steve Blass, who might have ranked #1 if not for his disease.

The MLB write up listed him as the 19th winningest Pirate of all time.

I defy anyone to, without looking it up, name three other men in the top 20.

Thanks, Bruce. Very interesting write-up. I've noticed a certain fascination with Dock Ellis that is like the handling of some fragile crystal of sentimental value. I don't know what it is beyond that he was a good pitcher with a far more interesting life in and out of baseball. But you know what? Reading about him, I really like him, and it seems a whole lot of others do too. That's living.
