Chris, I was with you 100 percent until the Ankiel thing. Why would the Cardinals trade Ankiel for an older player with a lower career OPS+ who can't play center and who will also be a free agent after the 2009 season? What do they get out of that? If they trade Ankiel, it should be for a middle-infielder or some pitching, not one-year of a middling outfielder.

Nady is a pure contact hitter with a 107 career OPS+ (without factoring in a tremendous three and a half months last year) and 4:1 K:BB ratio.

He is the worst hitter of the four OFers the Yankees have and the one with the highest resale value right now. Matsui, Damon, and Swisher are capable of putting up 120 OPS+ over a season, while Nady likely just had a flukey half season relative to his career.

If they can't trade him for something useful (which they should be able to, he does have some value) then he becomes a good guy off the bench, like Bruce says. But I think the best line-up is Damon/Brett Cabrera/Swisher and Matsui as the DH. I'd wager they might be able to get someone like Ankiel for Nady.

[1] I beg to differ: Mariano was not "groomed" to be a closer...it was a happy accident of Joe Torre's managerial tendencies. Mo was a failed starter who was wedged into the 8th-inning-guy role when Wetland was the closer. Torre pitched the shit out of him in '96, but instead of turning into Scott Proctor, his insane ability shown through and the rest was history.

Mo was not groomed, he just happened.

I would like to see Nady as an every day guy and I hope we are able to keep him around longer. he is a pure contact hitter and looked to handle NYC well last year. I think he's a great compliment to the rest of the lineup. He also seems to have that mid-90's yankee aura about him.

The one thing I think the yanks need to be more proactive about is getting ready for post-mariano era... mariano was groomed into that closer role -- it would be nice if we have a guy Mo could groom. It's going to be ugly for us when father time finally catches up to him.
