I followed boxing during the Eighties when I was a teenager--the Larry Holmes Era, the Sugar Ray, Hagler Era, and into the Tyson Era. I recall watching a lot of those big fights on TV at the time and actually caring about the boxers.

Then I turned away from it never to return. What has brought me back to boxing is reading because there is simply so much good writing about the sport. I was honored to share Schulian's column. He was a terrific boxing writer.

Great stuff. I love boxing, all the more since MMA's ascendence ... I liked that stuff at first, cause it was new, but I get sick of all the grappling and pounding - and the bare feet! So uncivilized. I always felt a little bad liking boxing cause it can be so violent, plus it's a shady sport, historically. MMA may not be in that way, but it's just ... kinda gross, so as I say, my appreciation for boxing is as high as it's ever been.

"That was why Hearns’s stock had skyrocketed when he caught Duran on the rebound and splattered that vicious little wharf rat across the canvas like a bad painting."

What a sentence! Thanks for posting the full column.
