It just didn't work out that way. The thing about bench players is that they're bad by definition, otherwise they wouldn't be bench players. Tradiing Matsui for almost anything of value (ideally a C or CF) would be a good move--frees up DH and salary--but I doubt they'd get anything of value for him.
