[15] Aha! I gotta admit, that's a nice choice. I remember when they renovated that place to the way it looks now, a throwback fifties-like diner. Fact is, most of Hyde Park is a throwback to an earlier time... if ya go down 9G, you'll see not only Julian's Grocery Store (tell him Will says hi, he won't remember), but also a sign and entrance to the former 9G Drive-In... interesting country up there (disclosure: I lived in Hyde Park from 1997-99, right before relocating to Da Bronx).

[16] For you sir, gladly:

The Syrup Story

I went to visit a friend of mine in Atlanta some years ago; after picking me up from the train, we went to an IHOP for breakfast. We ordered pancakes and such, and as we were chatting, the waitress brought the pancakes. I grabbed a blue-gray pitcher and poured the syrup on the the pancakes as my friend watched, thinking to myself, "wow, these pancakes are really absorbent..."

When the waitress came back again with the rest of our order, she set down a small, clear jar filled with what was clearly syrup. My friend and I stopped in mid-sentence... I looked at the jar... I looked at the pitcher... I said to the waitress, "Umm, excuse me... may I have another plate of pancakes? I think I just poured coffee all over my pancakes..."

But that's not all: as my friend is laughing at me, saying he was wondering why I was doing that (but chose not to say anything because he thought I liked my pancakes that way), the waitress also laughs and says, "Sure, no worries... that happens a lot around here!"

Honestly, the story I've never been able to live down is the spaghetti sauce on the ceiling, but this one is certainly a classic >;)

Much like the Chili Davis/Rock Raines question from the other day...do we have to choose? You can't go wrong with waffles from the Waffle House or pancakes from Cracker Barrel (I'm sure Jeb, uh I mean Evil Empire, can back me up on that one). Actually, when I'm at Cracker Barrel, I usually go for the biscuits and gravy (with one piece of French Toast off my wife's plate for dessert -- they give you four huge pieces of toast). But I guess you gotta be from the South to appreciate "cat head" biscuits and sawmill gravy... ;-)

btw, Chyll, you gotta tell your syrup story again... it cracks me up every time I think about it.

[14] am feeling the need for a bypass at the thought of Southern chicken-n-waffles...

It depends. I like pancakes when they're done right (light & fluffy), but when I was in college, I fell in love with the waffles we were able to make in the cafeteria.

I'm a pancakes or french toast guy. Waffles are fun, but they don't fill me up sufficiently. That said, when I was a kid the best treat at the pool snack bar was the block of Neapolitan ice cream between two freshly toasted waffles. Oh, and Alex and I once split a dessert waffle at a Belgian restaurant in the West Village . . . that thing was off the heezy. Curiously, I'll make both pancakes or waffles at home, but haven't made french toast since I was a kid and did so with my mom.

[6] Ah, sort of like "Egg in the basket." I haven't actually tried that, but when it comes to breakfast (my favorite meal), I'm willing to try anything with fried eggs.

I am convinced that just as there seem to be two types of people in the world, my friend (said in Eli Wallach/Tucco voice)--those who prefer waffles and those who prefer pancakes, so too are there two types of people: those who prefer yolky eggs (fried, poached) and those who prefer non-yolky eggs (scrambled, omelet).

I don't know if that is the case but it sure could be. My mom has a couple of wonderful cast iron waffle irons, with long handles to put over the fire, or stove, that are great.

You know, now that I think about it, some days I'd prefer waffles and other days I'd prefer pancakes.

I'd take a helping of both right now tell you the truth.

I think I'm a waffles guy. I lOVE pancakes but most of the times they are just too damn heavy for me and they sink to the pit of my stomach like an anvil. Though there are different kinds of pancakes. And when they are light and fluffly, or thin, almost like a crepe, they sure are hard to beat.
