Check out a recent French new wave flick called "Welcome" and some comments on forcedmigration.

Not that I could do it, but if I could, I would rather swim the channel than climb Everest. To Doc Counsilman who coached the Indiana swim teams and did it and to the author who swam in Lake Champlain in the winter, I am impressed beyond belief. As for Gertrude and all the other crossers, make and female, what an accomplishment.

The Burlington Y where I swim laps and do water aerobics has a swim in Lake Champlain group. Not me. Always cold and threatening, even when it is warm (on the land).

I look forward to reading the book.

I love to swim, but certainly not that much! I was more of a sprinter when I was a pup. Any more than two laps of an Olympic sized pool and I'd lose count...

heh heh

A dear friend of mine, the late and great James "Doc" Counsilman swam the Channel in 1979 when he was 58, the oldest at the time to do it.

He told me soon afterwards, "It was a great test of self, Peter. I passed the test as well as exceeded my own expectations, and I'll never do that again!" He was also famously quoted as saying after being asked about the experience, "It only hurt once, from beginning to end!"

He always represented what was best in men and left such a legacy cherished by all who knew him.

Obviously, Ms Ederle was the same.

: )

Here's a great article I found from when he was training for the swim.

Yeah, I had no idea about that boat incident, but was horrified when I read the account of it in the book.

The sea is ominous. I've grown to fear it. I love that she talked to the sea as if it had a consciousness. It's beyond bravery. It's almost like she had a sense of belonging. Fascinating, but hard to relate to. I have angst just thinking about it. I'll definitely put this book on my reading list. Thanks, Alex.

Interesting aside about the boat that sunk close to shore, yet 1,000 people perished largely because women weren't allowed to swim. This makes her feat all the more incredible 20 years later.

my grandfather would be all over this book, he was a big fan of the pioneers and heros of that era; lindbergh, joe louis, pete gray, etc. I think we have a Ederle autograph he picked up somewhere.

I don't know about you, but I have a strong reverence for the sea and the ocean. I can't imagine having the courage to swim out there. To be honest, I didn't know about Ederle before I read this book but found her story riveting. And Stout does a really good job animating the story and making it tangible and atmospheric. Really compelling.
