thelarmis – a mashup is basically creating a song by combining two (or more) other songs – ususally mixing the lyrics of one over the beat of the other – plus to me it involves combining genres – such as when jay-z and linkin park mashed up their song numb/encore (arod used this as his at-bat music a few years ago) – because if it is just laying the lyrics of one hip-hop song over the beat of another – i would just call that mixing which is something djs do all the time

One of the best examples is the Beatles Jay Z “Grey Album” from a few years ago.

[3] it’s from JJ’s amazing Volume 4 CD from 2003, when he reunited his original band from the Look Sharp!/I’m The Man era of the late 70′s. the album is unreal!!! toward the end, there’s a fun ska tune called “thugz ‘r us”, which is about white kids acting like black hip-hop thugs. the line in question is:

I got some mash-ups
With Snoop and Dr. Dre
I play ‘em louder
When my dad’s away

[2] hey man, can you tell me what a “mashup” is?! i’m a total idiot. i know it has something to do with rap/hip-hop, by i have NO idea what it is!!! Joe Jackson mentions it in relation to some hip-hop artists in a great song of his from a few years back and i’ve never known what it meant… THANKS, Sliced!!! : )

re: the Ministry of Silly Walks. Me and one of my fellow geeks in high school used to break into that Cleese walk when we’d run into each other in the hallways. Yeah, we got laid … never.
