[6] Yankees have hit .273 against Jackson. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/bvsp?playerId=5842&teamId=10 ... Much of the big numbers were posted when Jackson was with the Rays. This year, his line is incredible against the Yankees: 2 starts, 13 IP, 9 H, 2 R, (2 solo home runs allowed), 6 BB, 8 K, .196 BAA.

I think I'd rather have the Yankees face the Twins. The Yankees will lean toward the two off-days no matter what, which will lead Leyland to use Verlander and Jackson twice, if necessary, and neither would pitch on short rest. That's daunting, if you ask me.

[2] Around the trade deadline -- and mind you, I have no proof for this, but it was a thought -- I wondered if the Yankees would trade Joba for Roy Halladay. I still think it's a possibility for the offseason. One of those things I just can't get out of my head. I don't think it's a good move, but we've seen stranger things happen.

That's more of what I meant by he's pitching for his future ... his future on the Yankees.

The question (STILL unanswered here at the Banter) is:
Which is the better match up for us?

Our #4, Joba against their #4,
Zach Miner (4.36), A. Galarraga (5.64), J. Washburn (7.33)

-OR-

Our #2, AJ against their #2,
E. Jackson (3.25 ERA)

?

I would need to see some numbers on how we have hit against Jackson, but I think we have a better chance of winning the game of #4s then of #2s.

I think Joba's reduced arm strength has been the biggest factor in this season's struggles, probably causing him to alter his mechanics. I'm confident that he will be fully recovered next season.

As for the playoffs, I just want to see the team play relaxed and confident, so that their true talent level emerges. Too often since 2004, their hitters pressed which can be seen in the disparity between their regular season and playoff ISO D.

I am inclined to agree that putting Joba to the coals has an element of covering their own asses. It is fair to say he pitched badly for a month and a half. It is also fair to say that the handling of his season was really, really weird. On the other hand, I do not believe he is 'pitching for his fitire' in any significant way. For his spot in this post-season, yes. But his future is a long time, and not even this coming spring will 'decide' that. There's enough obvious talent there that a 23 year old will get time. Maybe not from NY, but he'll get it.

Saw this: "The Yankees plan to start A.J. Burnett, Chad Gaudin, and Chamberlain against Kansas City next week. That would enable them to flip flop Burnett and Andy Pettitte, with Burnett following CC Sabathia and starting Game 2 of the playoffs. "

That makes sense, and addresses some questions raised here a few days back.
