[6] I played two games at 9AM this morning at a field that is right on the water (foul balls hit over the first base fence went into the bay) and it was pretty cold, but once you get into the game, it's not that bad. I don't think the impact of cold, but dry weather is as bad as some think.

What I want to know is how one can play baseball in this weather.

It's not so bad if you stay loose. It was tough if you got jammed playing with aluminum bats, but overall it wasn't that bad.

Actually, Rich, that was unintentional. I added the link to your preview at the top so it was noticable. Nothing that Bruce did. My apologies if it gave the wrong impression in terms of characterizing your site. My bad.

Have to disagree about your general disapproval of pinch runners. For my money, I'll take a speed demon off the bench any day of the week. It's an amazing bullet to have. A pinch hitter, even a good one, cannot contribute bases as reliably as a pinch runner. Late innings, close game, a walk, hbp, single, error, can all very easily be translated to a double or even a triple. To say nothing of the distraction his very presence poses to the pitcher. As good as any pinch hitter might be, I don't see how he could be as reliably dangerous as a good pinch runner.

What I want to know is how one can play baseball in this weather. Can you imagine being hit by a pitch or catching a line drive in the heel in this bitter chill?

Better them than me.

Glad to know that Baseball Analysts is now part of the mainstream media. I wasn't aware of that before.

The Yankees scored the most run in MLB. The Angels scored the second-most runs. 915 to 883. 32 runs or .2 per game. An advantage but one that is well within the statistical margin of error.

Aren't you double counting a bit when you ask how the Angels are going to deal with a balanced lineup blah, blah, blah after letting everybody know that the Yankees scored more runs than any other team in major league baseball?

Undermanned bullpen? We shall see. There's no denying the superiority of Mariana Rivera. But nobody is going to convince me that Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain is better than Ervin Santana in the bullpen. Add in Kevin Jepsen and Marc Bulger and the Angels will fare just fine here.

Wow, that's a lot of switch-hitters! I feel badly that the only Angels switch-hitters are Chone Figgins, Kendry Morales, Erick Aybar, Macier Izturis, Gary Matthews, and Reggie Willits. But, hey, they won't make "favorable late-inning matchups a difficult proposition" for the Yankees because they are ... well, the Yankees!

Nice to see that you cherry picked the last series of the year between the Yankees and Angels and ignored the other seven games, not to mention the Angels' absolute domination of the past decade. But, then again, yours is an "objective" analysis.

With a $200+ million payroll, the entire Yankees organization and fan base should be embarrassed if they don't win this series. In fact, anything short of winning the World Series should be deemed a complete and utter failure.

Game on!

Spot-on, Bruce. I'm looking forward to the NYT writers getting the Angels' dicks out of their mouths so they can get back to writing about baseball.
