[1374] It's apoint well taken, but again, in this situation, I can't stress anymore how absolutely wrong I thought leaving AJ was. I stated in [677], [684] and [688]. I wish I could see some merit in the decision, but I just can't. If so, maybe I'd be sleeping now. One thing I always try to do is first guess before the outcome, but still, I can see your point. Just because I may THINK I am right about Girardi, doesn't mean I have to let everyone else know about it.

Well. I am finally done with work today (grant deadline looming), so I am off to sleep. Good night all.

I really need the Yanks to win Saturday because I have tix for a Game 7 on Sunday. Since the deadline is Monday 9am, I will probably have to work Sunday into the evening. So if there is a game, I have to choose between going to the Stadium and pulling an all-nighter or getting stuff done at a decent time (something my Boss is pushing hard for since he will have to stay up as well otherwise).

[1373] i don't think you literally ignore posters, i think you sometimes ignore the possibility that other opinions are legitimate. so when you initially say that girardi is definitely wrong, and other people give legitimate rationales for his move, you may address those posters but you will then later declare the same thing as an absolute. not as "i really think girardi should have gone to hughes to start the 7th," but "girardi has absolutely given away yet another game." this is frustrating for those of us whose opinions are being overlooked as not only wrong, but as not even plausible.
but no, i don't think you need to make an effort to tone it down. it's all just a game anyway.

[1372] I "absolutely" post more strong opinions...ones in which I have absolute conviction. So, yes, of course I do. Then, again, I probably post more altogether, so who knows what by absolute percentage is. I also never ignore anyone's responses (with one notable exception), so I am not sure from where you've gotten that impression. Having said that, I freely admit that I can seize onto something that I think is directly responsible for the Yankees losing, but in this forum (especially a game thread), I would think there is no bigger issue. When one thing is dominating your mind, it's pretty much all you have to say. I don't hink I am shouting down other's opinions, but If that annoys everyone, I can definitely make an effort to tone it down.

[1369] the 2nd part is definitely true, to an extent: we wouldn't take note of an uncontroversial post, but iwth you it might be more notable than an absolute statement. still, even if you do freely admit a close call even when you slightly side one way, and even if our opinions are a matter of perspective, i think you'd admit that you post more absolute statements than anyone else. as you say, that's fine and often good for conversation. other times it's irritating, particularly when the yankees lose or are losing or when you continually repeat the same opinion as fact despite much disagreement from other posters, which you often ignore or dismiss offhand. when both happen together, it's hard to take. it's good to have spirited arguments, but i don't think it's true that you always leave room for disagreement.

[1370] I never watch Bill O'Reilly...or really listen to Rush Limbaugh. I also am really no longer a very political person (the old spirit just rises out when others get too political). Rather, I really only allow more important things to have an impact on me...like whether the Yankees win or lose. I guess that's why I react more strongly to a Joe Girardi gaffe than the way others might react to things like Afghanistan and healthcare. Heck, when President Obama was elected, one of my first thoughts was the Yankees do better under a Democrat.

[1369] So how about that Bill O'Reily..quite a character, ain't he? :)

We'll get them on Saturday, I am fully confident Joe Saunders will NOT shut down our lineup again!

[1367] In this instance, I don't think Hughes was slightly better than AJ...I think it was an obvious decision because of how great Hughes has been in relief all season. I can pretend that I see merit to the AJ move, but I don't, especially when you consider the issue of Joba warming up. When it is a close call, I always freely admit, but not surprisingly, those posts (and I probably have way too many here) don't elicit much of a response. Why would they, after all?

[1365] I think monkeypants was being a little facetious. He is more of the hardline by the numbers type, while I subscribe to more of a psychology approach. Often times, I’ll talk about momentum, and he’ll ask me for evidence. I don’t think he believes I am stating facts, but maybe he can answer that.

Also, if we are going to nitpick, don’t you mean, “No. They are not clearly opinions,” in my opinion (and perhaps in monkeypant’s opinion)?

I appreciate the advice, but I think the reason why I engage in spirited debates is because I often have very strong opinions…ones that leave room for disagreement. If no one was interested in having debates, there wouldn’t be any point in expressing them. I also realize that when you have a disagreement, it's easy to think the other person is being dogmatic, but that is often a matter of perspective.

[1364] yeah, one of them was really far outside.

[1363] sometimes you have absolute opinions that you always think are right, otherwise they wouldn't be your opinion. like actual beliefs and things like that. but in games like baseball, there are almost always compelling reasons for various moves. sometimes it can be so clear that it's just about absolute. but a lot of the time it's so close that you can only predict which option will work out best. i don't believe you've presented evidence that this was a situation with an absolute correct move. and i believe you dismiss not only the compelling factors against that move, and not only the results, but also even the chance that it would work out even if it were the wrong decision. and i've hardly if ever heard you admit that something was a close call even if you thought one option was slightly better.

[1363] They may lose this series, but the odds say that they don't, and you sure sound like an epic whiner/scaredy-cat posting as though this is the likely outcome.

Massive douche Wally Matthews authored a "Yanks Two Games Away From An Epic Collapse" bit of nonsense - which is just so much horse shit. What were they a game ago? One game away from a monumental triumph over a nemesis? When the series started, should he have run a headline, "Yanks Four Games Away From A Painful Defeat"???

They lost a game. They had a chance to close out the series, it didn't happen, and the headline is still "Angels Face Must Win in Game 6."

Whether you are a whiner, or a scaredy cat, or just a Cassandra, I know I'm glad you're not our manager, because you have the constitution of a noodle without the slightest bit of al dente.

The Yanks took the one game of three that they needed, they took the two games at home that they had to have, and now the have the reward of a two game (max) series at home, where they need to win one.

I like where we are. I'm not happy about tonight, but it is what it is. As George Costanza would say, "We've got hand."

[1356] No. They are not clearly opinions. If they were *clearly* so, people wouldn't then be asking your for data to backup your assertions --as they did in response to your "brink of elimination" statement. Nor would someone think you stated a "truism."

And yes, even if *everyone* doesn't qualify their posts with "I think" or "in my opinion", most do employ those phrases more than you. I think.

Anyway, I am just making a point about style and giving you a new perspective on the reaction your statements elicit.

I'll tell you something that bothers me - Lackey is going to piss and moan about the Posada walk being a strike out, and my Red Sox fan friend pointed to it as evidence of a conspiracy - he had been out of the house for the earlier Damon call at first base, which was yet another jaw-droppingly bad call (the umps have just sucked, period, no conspiracy, just unbelievable levels of suck).

But I had seen the beginning of that at bat right before my stream dropped. And it had sure seemed to me that the first two strikes called on Posada were questionable. I checked pitch fx, and sure enough, they were both balls.

You got two free strikes in that at bat - the last call was wrong, but the former is a tiny bit of reason to consider shutting the fuck up, Mr. Lackey.

[1362] Don't you think your opinion is right (that leaving AJ in was reasonable)? I don't think it was reasonable. Clearly, this is a matter of opinion. I'd like to think that if one has an opinion, it is usually because they think it is correct. I've given my reasons why I think my opinion is valid, and you've done the same.

I realize I've been over the top and repetitive, but I do actually believe Girardi cost them this game (I am not just venting) and really feel strongly that they will now lose this series. So, if now isn't the time to go over the top, when?

[1358] if your opinion is backed up by another opinion that you're right and everyone who disagrees is wrong, that's pretty absolute. of course you're only expressing your opinion. it's the secondary opinion that bothers me.
still, we all enjoy you being here, and i wouldn't want you gone. i just think you are going way over the top tonight.
