about an hour or so ago, i was going thru an old box from atop my closet or under my bed or…from somewhere. anyway, i found a picture of me onstage with Michael Ray – Sun Ra’s main trumpet player!!! i totally forgot about that gig. it was Dec. 1998 in Atlanta, methinks.

This album has become one of my favorites, the live version of “Unity” is just insane..so so SO cool, you have to hear it, totally unique big-band sound.

one of the only drawbacks of moving, is that i won’t be walking/stumbling distance from the pub. that said, i’m only 3 miles from my main watering hole, so i can cab it a coupla times a month. tonight, i’m just gonna stay in and pack. i’ll head up the street Sat night, after me gig!

Yeah, 11+ years with no driving..would be happy never to drive again actually. I never undersatnd how people in the ‘burbs actually do it..you can’t get anywhere without driving, then you can’t drink..what’s the point of life if I can’t have my one night out a week be a blur of Guinness and jazz bars, followed by me stumbling on the train home here in Tokyo??

i think Blue Note already has bankrupt me! i never thought i’d get this bad. i really had no business continuing to collect after i lost so much work this summer. i need to ask my best friend, who’s a psychiatrist, but i have a theory. see if you think it holds any water…

i started this kick last october when my grandpa got sick. i was a thousand miles away and felt hopeless and alone. one evening, on the phone with my mom, i blurted out: “i wanna go buy some jazz cd’s.” she said, “get off the phone, go to the store and buy some fuckin’ jazz cd’s.” (yes, she cursed. that was word for word.) i had sooo much fun that i went back the next day, then a coupla days later, then hit other stores and the interwebs.

i slowed down for a coupla months, starting in june, when i lost a lot of work and when my grandpa woulda been 97. i’ve started up again in earnest, even though i have no money and he’s been gone since mid-march. i had a plan to stop (god, i sound like a friggin’ drug addict!) around now, ‘coz of the move and address change – don’t want anything getting lost in the mail! but, i keep finding more titles i want and it’s…FUN!!!

i think, in a way, i’m equating this to being with my granpa, since i started this buying binge to help me feel better about his illness and decline. i haven’t dealt with his death and can’t fully accept that he’s gone. perhaps, somewhere in my mind, continuing to buy these blue note jazz cd’s makes me feel better. it won’t bring my grandpa back, but i feel a connection.

that’s good enough for me. at least my vice is safe, healthy and productive…not to mention, a tax write-off for me! : )

I personally would not drive when smoking (I don’t like driving any time since I had an accident in college, havn’t driven in 11+ years since I got here) but am not sure it would impair you that much…I think ganja gets a bad rap, I know it helps like nothing else for migraines..

in my endless piles of crap, i found an old blue note catalog, from about 10 years ago, or so. there’s a partial discography in there and there are a TON of cd’s i don’t have. noooooo!!!!! gotta get ‘em… : ~

[22] man, i’d say YES. emphatically, it DOES impair driving, and a host of other things. lord knows i wouldn’t wanna get in the car w/ someone who’s stoned…or drunk. a dude in college once told me he actually drives better when stoned ‘coz he pays more attention. he later got arrested for growing weed in his closet and selling it.

In Japan Lincecum would have been thrown in jail for 14days BEFORE being charged..they don’t like drugs here. (needless to say, Mr. OK Jazz stays far, far away from such things here..I think many of us believe marijuana should be legal but I won’t fight the law here, 99% conviction ratio in Japanese courts…shudder…)

Check out this oral history of the great under-appreciated teen rebellion flick Over The Edge, co-starring a very young Matt Dillon. I watched this movie on cable over and over back in ’82 or so.
