[32] Man..Leo Smith taught at my college when I was there..but I wasn’t so into jazz yet and didn’t know who he was!! Richard Teitlebaum taught there too (keys & electronics, and good friends with Anthony Braxton) I missed such an opportunity to learn from these guys!! there’s a mention of Leo Smith there. remind me sometime to tell you about a series of Miles tributes he did, if you’re not already familiar with them. unreal. when i got them, they totally renewed my belief in music. incredible amalgam of superstars. done in SF a few years back. tremendous recordings. Upriver was one of ‘em. they’re packed up right now, so it’ll be a solid month, at least, til i find those boxes, haha!

i didn’t know that guy you liked was a trumpeter for Sun Ra. check this out:

about an hour or so ago, i was going thru an old box from atop my closet or under my bed or…from somewhere. anyway, i found a picture of me onstage with Michael Ray – Sun Ra’s main trumpet player!!! i totally forgot about that gig. it was Dec. 1998 in Atlanta, methinks.

This album has become one of my favorites, the live version of “Unity” is just insane..so so SO cool, you have to hear it, totally unique big-band sound.

[28] ya know, i used to think i had a decent sized BN collection. but really, i had goodly amount of titles from the same artist. re: a TON of Mobley, and a lot of: grant green, dexter gordon, herbie hancock, sonny clark, lee morgan, etc. the usual suspects. i’ve branched out like crazy and learned sooo much. the music is terrific and the collecting, albeit stressful – costly, no room, overseas transactions, post office, etc. – is a lot of fun!

one of the only drawbacks of moving, is that i won’t be walking/stumbling distance from the pub. that said, i’m only 3 miles from my main watering hole, so i can cab it a coupla times a month. tonight, i’m just gonna stay in and pack. i’ll head up the street Sat night, after me gig!

[26] That makes perfect sense, man! Don’t need a shrink if you can self-diagnos like that :) Your connection to your grandpa and like for jazz, combined into that situation..sure. Are you compulsive in other ways as well though?

Yeah, 11+ years with no driving..would be happy never to drive again actually. I never undersatnd how people in the ‘burbs actually do it..you can’t get anywhere without driving, then you can’t drink..what’s the point of life if I can’t have my one night out a week be a blur of Guinness and jazz bars, followed by me stumbling on the train home here in Tokyo??
