I actually hope the Sox make a deal like this. Let them empty the farm for an older pitcher. Plus, they sorta have to make a big move.

Please, Cash, do not give uyp the farm for Halliday. Yes he’s good. Now.
But we should not give up on AJ or Jesus Montero. And how many more games would Halliday win than Joba or Phil? Not $100 mil more. And if Joba and Phil become the 3 and 4 starters (or a 3 plus a reliver), they’ll be good for years longer than Halliday.

Please, Brian, enjoy your turkey and trimmings, and let us be tjhankful for the possibilities before us in the long term.

[4] Halladay is an extreme ground ball pitcher,so Beckett had better strikeout more batters. Of course, his K/9IN rate wasn’t that much higher: 8.4 to 7.8. What’s more, Beckett’s K rates have been declining, while Halladay’s jumped up higher the last two seasons. Furthermore, Halladay is a workhorse (220 IP or more the last four seasons), while Beckett has never reached that total in his career).

In other words, there really is no comparison and no reason to indicate that Beckett will take a significant leap to Halladay’s level. I hope the Red Sox think they’d rather have Beckett over the next 4+ years.

Beckett isn’t as durable as Halladay.

I agree with [1] that Theo won’t give up Kelly and Bucholz.

Given Cash’s “prospects or contract” philosophy, it’s hard to see the Yankees making a trade for him.

[3] Beckett’s had better K numbers than Halladay, though worse BB and gives up more HR. I think they’re very close, and probably about equal over the next four or five years.
Add to that the fact that the Sox would have to give up two top young players to get Halladay and I think it’s not smart to let Beckett walk in favor of a trade-and-sign for Halladay.

[1] Beckett is three years younger, but he really isn’t in Halladay’s class. Even if it came down to losing Beckett, I think the Sox would still be better off with Halladay.

My guess is Toronto will demand too much from the Yanks or Sox, and that he won’t be traded to a division rival. Guessing he goes to Phillies or Dodgers.

re: the Bugs buzzard. I suspect the Vlad the vulture character in “Horton Hears A Hoo” is based on this classic Bugs sketch. Will Arnett voices him as a bungling buzzard with a cheesy Dracula accent. Vlad could be Killer’s daffy uncle.

Yeah, I’ve been following this. (The Sox/Halliday thing, not the vulture thing.)

I don’t believe Theo will give up Buchholz plus Keller. Those two plus the nine figure check they’d have to lay on Halliday looks like too much. Remember that Beckett’s contract comes up next year, and if they pay for another superstar pitcher I just don’t think they’ll have the money for Beckett. So that makes it very costly indeed to trade a good pitcher and a potential All Star for an aging ace.
