[10] Huston’s brilliant in Chinatown, but the leads are so strong, he doesn’t shift the balance.

How about Richard Widmark in “Kiss of Death.” The movie doesn’t hold up all that well outside of his searing debut.

How about John Huston in “Chinatown”? One of the most subtle “evil” characters in film history..

Good call on Hopkins. That’s solid gold. I wouldn’t agree on Goodman only because Bridges is so strong. If anything, Turturro’s small turn stole the show in that one too.

- Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York
- Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs (he only has something like 24 minutes of screen time)
- John Goodman in Lebowski
- Nicholson in A Few Good Men

Yup, that was like Orson Wells in The Third Man, the all-star cameo, though I don’t know that he completely overshadowed everyone else–Connery was strong too.

Sean Penn, great call there.

Yeah, the Duvall character is the extreme, so minor. But I don’t think the movie ever recovers from his cameo–dude burned a whole in the screen.

Disagree about Duvall though; he’s just not in the movie long enough.
