[16] “#9 Dream” is beautiful, as are “Love,” “Mother,” “How” and “Jealous Guy,” among others. I wouldn’t go quite so far as to call “Watching the Wheels” elevator music, though, I think it’s got a genuineness, a poignancy to it that redeems it. Also, it’s got John’s trademark honesty (“Just tell the truth and make it rhyme.”) You’re probably right that it’s elevator music in form, but less in content, I think.

I imagine New Years Eve with Mark Teixeira involves charades and pictionary. On the other side of the spectrum, I have no idea what a weirdo like A-Rod would have in store, so I’d try to avoid that too.

I heard this song the other day and though I like it I was kind of wondering at how the dyed in the woll rock n roller who would turn his nose up at some of McCartney’s more treacly output could make such a lite rock staple. It’s fine elevator music but it’s elevator music nonetheless.

And I love Mind Games too, his “f-you I don’t need you” to Phil Spector. And today … and yesterday I was thinking of #9 Dream, and what a loving and beautiful song that is.

i saw your post on the kobe/lebron commercial – when it came on i thought of you and wondered what you thought.

I dunno, here’s how I’d picture it:

Jeter – Great guy to know, would encourage you to have fun, but if you weren’t or you were shy he’d leave you to your own devices and forget all about you. Not a pushy guy, but then not a guy you can easily keep up with, either.

A-Rod – Would be nice to you until he disappears behind the velvet rope and you never see him again.

Reggie – The center of attention, would introduce you to everyone in the know, would conduct a guided tour of all the places you need to know, giving you fatherly advice when not in the crowd and complaining about everything under the sun when not advising you. I think he and my brother or step-father would have a better time hanging out.

Mo – Give you a ride to midnight mass and back.

Bernie – That would be a quiet ride, unless you decide to talk about music.

Paul – Quintessential big brother; drag you to all his favorite spots and high five all his pals, then complain about what a drag you are. Then he goes home to be with his family because he misses them/they miss him.

Coney – Now there’s a pal. Gracious, accommodating, yet ready for Freddy. Gimme the keys, Coney, I’m driving… unless he’s too old for that now and just wants to be in the crowd when the ball drops. Boring…

Cashman – A learning experience the whole night. That and I would never turn my back on him the whole time.

CC – If he’s anything like my friend, who resembles him, he’d be my first choice. We’d be cracking on each other the whole time and looking for trouble to get into. But he’s a family man, so I don’t think it would be nearly that much fun. He’d be better to hang out with at a barbecue, I bet.

Teix – I’m not comfortable even just looking at him. I’m sure he’d be having more fun than me.

So I’d take a pass. I’ve never been that big on hanging out on New Year’s Eve, only because I’m not a drinker and I’d probably be a drag on such a night. I’ll be up watching the Honeymooners marathon, peace!

I went with Cashman because frankly, he’s not calling me as much as he used to, and I’m getting a bit behind on what’s going on.

Paulie O. would be great to play wiffle ball with. I bet he talks great smack in the backyard.

Coney would be fun to tag along with on a night out. Seems like the kind of guy stuff just happens to, and who is silly enough to go with it.

CC – I’d just like to sit next to a guy like that. I’m 5’8″, a buck 25. I love hanging around people who are supposedly in the same species as me but so clearly different animals.
