Alex, be honest: “I became impatient at times and skimmed over passages” is code for “I got distracted by Oui and spent hours masturbating daily,” isn’t it? Or maybe I’m projecting.

OK ... that's an image I didn't need ... :-)

I immediately identified with this book in the 10th grade. Phonies are ubiquitous at all stages of live, but I had only just begun to see it.

I've reread The Catcher in the Rye a couple of times in the last several years. Each time I find myself thinking how much of an impact did it have on me when I first read it 20 years ago. A good amount I suppose since I do enjoy it each time.

Nicely wrought paragraph in The Onion:

CORNISH, NH—In this big dramatic production that didn't do anyone any good (and was pretty embarrassing, really, if you think about it), thousands upon thousands of phonies across the country mourned the death of author J.D. Salinger, who was 91 years old for crying out loud. "He had a real impact on the literary world and on millions of readers," said hot-shot English professor David Clarke, who is just like the rest of them, and even works at one of those crumby schools that rich people send their kids to so they don't have to look at them for four years. "There will never be another voice like his." Which is exactly the lousy kind of goddamn thing that people say, because really it could mean lots of things, or nothing at all even, and it's just a perfect example of why you should never tell anybody anything.

even though i wasn't a rebellious, brooding type teenager i really liked the catcher in the rye which i read as a teenager.
maybe the theme of exposing phonies spoke to me, i am not sure.
but i do remember that it was one of the few books i read at that time that i actually enjoyed. i was a voracious reader as a kid, and i read a pretty good amount as an adult, but i remember having little interest in most of the books we had to read for school when i was in middle and high school. catcher in the rye was an exception so it will always have a special place for me.

I didn't read Catcher in the Rye until I was an adult, but I read the Nine Stories as an eighth grader. I thought about them for a long time. But I hadn't thought about them at all for ages, until yesterday.

Qui? Maybe Oui?

Catcher was alright, but I never got the feeling that it was the greatest book ever.

There were some Harlan Ellison books out there that I also read in high school (on my own, rather than for class) that made me go "wow".

Salinger and The Catcher in the Rye still has quite an influence on me, first book I read that I said to myself "that's a fucking book". To Kill a Mockingbird had a similar appeal, but the catcher in the rye popped my cherry when it comes to having a long lasting memory.

Peace, J.D!
