Horseradish is key! I drank a fair amount of bloodys in the '80s. I liked them spicy. My late sister-in-law drank bloody bulls. That seemed repulsive to me. I think they contain beef bouillon.

I imagine the classic bloody at an old NY hotel bar with wood paneling.

Growing up in NJ, we weren't big "brunch" people in the NY social scene way of doing things. Leaned more towards the greasy pork roll and omelettes at the diner. But lately we've been going out on Sundays more often- guess it's mebbe just a sign of getting old that Saturday nights are quiet and we're up early on Sundays?

I love tomatoes and tomato juices of all types as well as tabasco, celery, Old Bay, and whatever else you might throw into a Bloody Mary, with the exception of vodka. Whiskey, gin, or bourbon are all nice, but don't seem to really be brunch faire. I usually go for a nice mid to dark beer at brunch- an English ale or sum'n Belgian.

Had some kickass shrimp and grits last week. Going again today, after a bike ride, and can't wait.

Alex,
these taster's cherce bits are great- I hope you keep them up even occasionally once the reg'lar season starts.

As a gigantic fan of bloody marys and a long time reader of the blog (I go back 3 site designs I believe) I must interject with my 2 cents. As someone who grew up around them for all holidays and hated them for the majority of my life, I have grown to love and apprecaite them. There is nothing like a bloody mary at a Penn State tailgate at 10 am. I often have them on Satuday mornings in the fall and winter before I watch football.

Today I actually had one for a different reason . My girlfriend who I have lived with for 4 years is stuck in Santiago, Chile after the earthquake and I needed a bloody to clam my nerves after a long night of pacing back and forth in my apartment.

It really is an oustanding drink that is part of my family (as awful as that sounds), whether it be for the Rose Bowl on New Years day, a typical chilly fall brunch or just a random Saturday at Penn State.

Thanks for pointing out these reciptes, I plan on trying out the majority of them.

Keep up the great work Alex, have been a huge fan of the blog for a long time.

I love Bloody Marys but, only for breakfast. I like tomato juice, too, with a good dose of black pepper. The hot sauce is key but, not too much. Get some Worcesteshire in there and some white pepper.

there's a place at teh Delaware shore with a big shark head coming out of the front of the bar where they set you up with a do it yourself bloody mary. They give you a pint glass, fill it with 3" of vodka and you have about 5000 variations of juice and condiments to choose from. Only went there once. Eggs were good. took a 4 hour nap after breakfast.

Most of Rhode Island got some sleet and melting flurries yesterday and there was virtually no snow on the ground by nightfall. My yard now has about six inches. I guess I'm in the RI snow belt.

Bloody's are Yummy. I hate tomato juice, though. And the thought of V8 is wretched to me. Something about hot sauce and liquor is good, though. : ) And olives should be banished for eternity.

[1] Same here. (Only I love, love, love olives.) And like Alex, I like the idea of a Bloody Mary and I kind of wish I liked to drink them.

[2] You don't like strawberries???

This blog has the coolest readers, but the readers with the weirdest tastes in all internetdom.

[1] That makes perfect sense to me. I love peanut butter, but I don't eat peanuts. V8 is nasty; is it gazpacho or just lukewarm tomato + carrot juice? And why do I wanna hurl when I look at strawberries, but then I'd drink a gallon of Strawberry Quik and then... well, you know what Strawberry Quik does to most people...

Never could get into Bloody Marys. I just don't like tomato juice, though I love tomatoes. Similarly, I love olive oil, but can't stand olives.
