Good write up Cliff. I hope that Joba can demonstratehe belongs int he rotation. Maybe it's me, but I think we're gonna see both of them getting 15+ starts this season, due to age and infirmity in the middly of the rotation. My guess is that Phil gets his 150 between being a backup starter and reliever. What looks llike too much pitching in March almost never is - ask the 09 Red Sox.

[8] Totally worth it. I would have done the same thing. I reached the opposite conclusion about Spitzer, until I saw his wife.

This has not been a good few weeks for the Governor
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/04/nyregion/04paterson.html?hp

The state Commission on Public Integrity charged Gov. David A. Paterson on Wednesday with violating state ethics laws when he secured free tickets to the opening game of the World Series from the Yankees last fall for himself and others. The announcement came as the governor, already mired in scandal, met with his cabinet and insisted he would stay in office.

In addition to violating the state’s ban on gifts to public officials, the commission found that Mr. Paterson falsely testified under oath that he had intended to pay for the tickets for his son and his son’s friend. The commission determined that Mr. Paterson had never intended to pay for the tickets and only did so after inquiries from the media, after which he submitted a backdated check as payment.

[6] I'm confused. Are you saying that Hughes could make 31 starts and essentially stick in the rotation the whole year with the kind of limits Chamberlain had? Do you think they would do that again given how poorly Chamberlain responded, rather than another strategy? Say, getting Hughes close to the innings limit, then putting him in the bullpen for the remainder of the year?

[2] Actually, Joba made 31 starts last year, so, yes, Hughes could legitimately win the job.

[4] Certainly. Part of the excitement is that it seems like we will have such great depth. All except Mo could falter, but several have the potential to be lights-out, including Hughes or Chamberlain.

[2] i would say tempered excitement. relievers are volatile as hell and they have such a small margin for error. but the potential talent is there and if anyone falters they can hopefully call up some of the "reinforcements" and they do well.

It is curious that this is framed as a Joba v Phil competition, because Phil really *can't* win the 5th starter job -- at least not for the whole year -- because of his innings limitations. So, even if Phil "wins" in the Spring, someone else will be in that slot at some point this year.

Is anyone else really excited about this year's bullpen? Seems to be even stronger than last year given Park, solid development from Robertson and Aceves, and Marte's turnaround.

good post cliff.

i think this line is one of the keys:
"Speaking of which, those growing pains have been overstated."
joba threw some gems, some shit bombs, and quite a few games in between.

he also made it through a whole season uninjured - which hughes did too though with much less work which is of course a big step as well.

hopefully the yankees will be very willing to let hughes pitch multi-inning stints. the chp signing concerns me a little, because the yanks pen might presumably have four pitchers (chp, gaudin, meat-tray, aceves) that could be seen as multi-inning work guys and because hughes has the most dominant stuff they may fall in the trap of him in the 8th.
(i am of course supposing joba is the 5th starter, but i think unless he bombs in spring training his lack of innings limits and slightly more refined secondary pitches land him that spot)
