On the risk/reward scale, Mitre is a no-brainer. I don't really expect our #24 and #25 guys to be particularly good, and have less expectations of our #26 and down.

In the past, if a totally average guy had 1 or 2 good years, then George had to have him. It seems to me we have a history of buying high. Now, with the likes of Swisher and Granderson, it seems Cashman is getting smart and buying low. Mitre fits this mode (not comparing him as a talent to S and G). He costs nothing and most probably could be better then his history indicates.

If the guy can be a 5.00 ERA pitcher or better, with a good BB/9 rate, he is valuable to us,

I've got no problem with the Yankees keeping Mitre. I'll discount last year as his TJ surgery year. I'd like to see what he can do now.

At worst, he could always be traded to KC for a bucket of balls.

For a lot of years the long man's job on this team has been to come in to a 5 run deficit in the third, turn it into a nine run deficit by the fourth, and once the game is thoroughly out of reach, settle down somewhat and "give us innings" (Jeff Karstens, I'm looking at you.) One of the reasons I absolutely loved Aceves last year was that while he could go two or three innings if need be, he wasn't going to give up six runs in that span. he gave the team a chance

If Mitre can be the Aceves/Mendoza guy this year, more power to him.

That being said

[4] He has a 2.0 BB/9 in the minors. I'm not worried about it. I think his wildness last year was mostly nerves. Now that he's had a few sips of Big League Joe, I think he'll be fine.

Melancon has a good arm, but he has a hard time finding the plate @ the ML level. I know SSS and all, but still; if he's going to be coming out of the pen, he has to throw strikes.

It looks like Mitre's luck keeps improving.

I wonder what sequence of events this season will result in Mitre getting a dozen starts and one of the Yankees young pitchers losing a year of development toward starting.
