I haven't read a work of fiction in longer than I'd care to admit, but after reading this interview I think I'll add Mr. Dexter's books to my growing list of books I hope to get around to one day. Sigh.

Great interview! I actually read the whole thing. To be honest, there is too much content on the banter for me to read most of it. It's pretty rare I read a whole post anymore. That's how good it was though. I couldn't stop reading.

Thanks for this. I haven't read Dexter, but I've planned on it ever since your last piece on him. As someone who has written sometimes, I really got a lot out of this interview.

Nobody's Fool. Empire Falls.

Bridge of Sighs is autobiographic to some extent. A lot of heart. as he's writing about his hometown. Predictable though.

LOL You and my husband would have a lot to talk about.

Maybe it's a personal preference, but I gravitate to snark. It's someone who's snide like our Patty. Biting humor can be snark. I'm sure I'm wrong to use it about Dexter. He isn't tepid though.

Dexter does seem like a writer, who as a master craftsman rigorously cleans up his work. His sentences have polish. He's a refined talent. A cutter going in on lefties.

What I like about Russo is his connectedness.

Yeah, as an aspiring writer, I definitely got a lot out of what he had to say about his process, especially about not over managing or over thinking a piece beforehand and letting it take you where it wants to go. That said, I've never attempted to write fiction so I don't understand how a fiction writer's mind works.

Is Dexter snarky? I always thought that word was a put-down or something that seems somehow unappealing. Maybe I'm wrong. He's definitely a wise guy.

Yeah, he's a real natural, which isn't to say he doesn't work at it. To me, he's the literary Mariano Rivera. Hard working, a craftsman, but also just naturally gifted in a way that most people are not.

I haven't read any of Russo's work...yet.

And oh yeah, wife torturing IS a premeditated event. I just have to be careful not to go overboard, cause she can always come back and hit me where it really hurts. And my thin-skinned, cry-baby ass can fall to pieces a lot faster than she can.

LOL

Great writer, great interview! You like those snarky guys, hey AB? Funny that he is a Yankees fan, which began as a vehicle to torture his wife. Never have I received such confirmation that wife torturing is a premeditated event.

I love his writing and it's ironic that while he's not florid, I do hang on his sentences because they are so artfully crafted (perhaps much to his chagrin). This might be hyperbole, but he's a natural.

I like his shout-out to Richard Russo. I completely agree with his assessment of someone who can spin a yarn and you can feel the heart put into his subjects. That was so astute.

I also love what he said about not creating outlines for his work; letting the characters take him on a journey, if you will. That is just so appealing.

Newspapers don't give writers freedom or a shot like they did back then either. That must have been a great time.

Growing up in the Philly area, in those days, they were the Golden Age for columnists in the Philly Newspapers! Dexter and MacMullen in the News, Hochman and Merchant doing sports. Grady in the Bulletin, they don't have writers that report on the human condition, like they did then.
