It should be noted that Smokey and the Bandit, and Cannonball Run were supposed to be more serious than they turned out to be.

It's a good piece, but I didn't find it terribly tough or shocking, given the nature of Reynolds' own comments about himself. He's pretty much been saying for most of the last 20 years that he was too easy on himself and squandered his talent. Basically, once he became the top box office star, he stopped pushing himself and went into cruise control.

The shame is that Reynolds really was very good with a presence that doesn't come along very often. When he was on he could be remarkably charming and funny - the blue collar Cary Grant line is dead-on. Also, he was quite good in more serious parts like Robert Aldrich's Hustle and of course, Deliverance.

Also, I wouldn't lump the first Smokey & The Bandit in with its sequels or the Cannonball Run movies. It's dopey, sure, but it's actually very funny (largely because of Gleason).

"He sank to their level because he didn’t have the will, or courage, to fulfill his own talent"

Good article, but this statement seems off. I think Jordan is assuming that it's easy to know what is the courageous thing to do in one's career. Without having any first hand experience with Hollywood, I suspect it's a pretty tough place to keep your feet on the ground. That combined with a lot of booze, a lot of money, and the rewards you get for the quick gimmick... poor Burt.

Jordan has held his own youth up for blinding scrutiny. I think he might enjoy doing the same to other people. Seems like a pretty honest guy. Not nasty. Just very, very tough.

I always liked Burt, but theres definitely an air of wasted potential around him. I think Boogie Nights proved that

Sometimes Pat can get almost mean-spirited when he nails a guy, but I think Burt did have it coming.

Yikes! That was certainly a glancing blow at a particularly sensitive moment in the man's career, but who's to say it wasn't coming? He's right about the poor choices he made in his career. I wonder if the Hollywood System from the so-called "Golden Age" was still in place how far he would have gone in his carer, if at all...
