“What if?” works immeasurably better in real life than in a comic books. In comics it’s sort of silly and redundant: “What if this thing that didn’t happen didn’t happen and something else didn’t happen instead?”

So I love the what-if game — but this one made me a bit ill. Every time I read those doomsday scenarios about how Steinbrenner wanted to trade Rivera or how the Houston scout begged the Astros brass to draft Jeter it somehow still makes me nervous. It’s the craziest thing. So please don’t talk about it anymore.
