Thanks, Cliff. That’s awesome that he’s in the pressbox with the writers. I don’t know why, but I just assumed that the official scorer would be in a lonely, dark compartment sandwiched between the scoreboard operator and the organist. With a cape.

The official scorer announces plays that are in doubt (hit/error, wild pitch/passed ball) or not obvious (the scoring on a run down, for example). He also gives the official pitching lines after pitchers come out of games and announces the final totals. He doesn’t announce each play. And, yes, he’s the one and only official scorer. He’s the man who decides what’s a hit and what’s an error etc.

AB, I’ve questions about something you wrote in the game thread:

Legendary local scorer, Bill Shannon sits five people down and it is an honor to be near the man let alone having the pleasure of listening to him score a game. He is a gregarious man with a wonderfully distinctive voice and way of speaking–he’s a direct descendant of Damon Runyon’s New York. Enough to keep me sitting in my seat and enjoying myself for a minute.

So I’m wondering… He actually calls out each official play? Verbally? As in, “Catcher Rod Barajas grounds into double play. Four-six-three. Pagan out at second base”? Also, is he the official scorer that the gamecallers are always referring to? Thanks man. Great pics!
