What you hear there is the fact that it's over for Joyce, and he knows it. He'll keep umpiring, and he might keep the respect of the players and his colleagues, but his name will forever be linked with that call. It's his legacy, it will out live him. He can't do anything positive to overshadow it the way a player could. It's devastating to hear that in his voice. "I worked with Don Denkinger. I know what he went through" -- just kills me.
