I don’t watch soccer but it’s an awesome sport. Honestly I’d watch the world cup but for the time that i’d never get back (and I already spend too much time on sports). Also, the nationalism of it doesn’t appeal to me. But the game is good fun.

[14] Oh no Chyll, not you too??? I think part of the joy in soccer is the buildup. You can see a team chipping away slowly but surely at the defense til it’s only a matter of time till they score. Infinitely more entertaining than watching a running back plow into a steroid line for three yards, watch a time-out, then watch a punt, then a commercial, then a huddle, then another running play!

I will get dismissed or ignored for anything I say in general, so I’ll say it: soccer is a bore to me because of the dearth of scoring. There. I’m not interested in watching men run around literally kicking the crap out of each other unless there’s more at stake. And national pride does absolutely nothing for me; I must have that disease where if you’re American and you can’t beat other countries in something popular, you’re not interested >;)

Golf: I now understand why (some) people want to play it. A couple of years ago I tried it out for the first time, and discovered that smacking a good drive is very satisfying. But I can’t fathom watching it on television. I dunno, maybe I’d enjoy seeing it live (though I doubt it).

Historical perspective? Even a basic glance at the last 15 years would show at least 7 countries either bombed or invaded by the US. Grand total of ZERO for invaded or bombed countries by Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea, China or Cuba..but we’ll never agree on this so again, my bad for the “political” jibe. (You can’t fight me on the metric system though!!)

[10] Correct! I hate golf and find it dull, but no denying it’s a popular sport round the world that people follow closely. Soccer is by FAR the world’s most popular game, boring or not if you like sports, hard not to acknowledge that..

[5] it’s killing me already. I finally escaped hockey up here, with the end of the painfully long NHL playoffs, just in time for the fargin’ world cup to begin! Didn’t the last one just end like two months ago? It sure feels like it. It’s almost July and in north America that *should* mean only one thing sports-wise, and that’s baseball, my man.

Just back from a bar called The Ainsworth on 26th. Atmosphere through the roof, full way past capacity. 50 TV, 48 on world cup, 2 on Yanks and Stros. Singing, chanting, swilling, sweating through your shirt.

When Green fumbled the ball into the net, the English screams (20% of the crowd?) were as loud as the US cheers.

Boring? Perhaps, but maybe when everybody else in the world is into something and you aren’t, it’s best not to be so dismissive about it and just move on to something you enjoy.

[5] Oh man, you’re off base! The passion and tension at the WC is like Game 7..but for a whole month! Once you get into soccer it’s not so boring..(and to be honest, Yanks vs. Astros on a humid night in Texas where the players are half asleep…baseball can be a bit boring too sometimes!)

Time to head off to work, hope we sweep the Stros tomorrow. And yeah, pretty sad showing by the Phils in Fenway…
