That street of empty storefronts across from the diner is the same one Hopper painted in Sunday Morning. I'd never really put that together before.

[2] When he wasn't busy being a great Cape Cod painter.

I always like how the diner seems to be a one-story building. Not many of those in the city. I sometimes find myself ducking down, as if something was blocking my view of the diner rooftop. Godamn good composition.

4) Yes, well said. I have a strong pull to look back, to the past, but also know that I'd never leave the house due to depression if I dwelled too much there. Part of being a New Yorker is being passionate about what is lost, about even getting angry, or just plain being sad by the relentless change; however, another part of being a true New Yorker is shrugging your shoulders and soildering on.

interesting stuff, thanks alex.

i always wondered about the location of nighthawks myself.

while i don't feel as strongly as moss' disappointment either, because i also think it is an artist's inclination to combine images real and imagined, i understand moss' disappointment with what he perceives as another demolition. as people who are not from nyc and who have some degree of romanticism in our view of the city there are certain elements of the changing city that are very hard to witness. we come from places where you have bs chains up everywhere and whatnot, we know what that's like and don't want nyc to become that, so there is a desire to hold on to these old images that we have seen.
