Now that Yankee Stadium itself is gone, I suppose it makes sense that Bob Sheppard would leave us, too. Thanks for the memories.

Wow, what a life that was. What a life. Thinking about the Yankees he watched and, well, shepherded to home plate, it's humbling.

I hoped that Mr. Sheppard would have been able to announce at least one time in the New Yankee Stadium, just to anoint the building with his grace.

We will never forget what he brought to the experience of attending a Yankee game (and Giants too). His type of NY accent is fading away, but I remember as a kid many people spoke in that silk stocking, blue blood, east side sort of way. Think of the sound of a recorded FDR speech, or a tape of Mayor Lindsey speaking.

Mr. Sheppard had the accent with the pipes of a professional announcer. He also put out that noble vibe, but with an edge of kindness. Never met him, but he must of had a great, long fulfilling life. I am profoundly saddened by this news, no one lives forever, but i thought maybe he could.

RIP

Wow. Thanks Ed and Alex for this beautiful piece. I've always known that Mr. Sheppard was more than just the voice of the Stadium, but now I have a true picture of the man. Thank you so much.

Oh my. 15 minutes ago I didn't think Bob Sheppard could mean more to me than then. And now.. as a musician.. I feel even more connected to him than just a boy at my first Yankees game. Hopefully one day we can hear that song. And the writings? I sure hope that his wife and family consider publishing said poems and writings. Surely there's thousands of Yankee fans who would love to gain insight from a man who quietly watched the cogs turn for over half a century!

Thank you for the article, Mr Alstrom. And RIP, Mr Sheppard!

Here's a quick video tribute to Bob Sheppard (carryover from last thread):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj434vCtNRw
