The thing I was going to add in yesterday's comments was about speed and Lupica. When I had dinner with Ziegel I talked to him about a lot of writers and even the ones he loved--and he seemed to love nobody more than Lenny Shecter--he didn't fawn over. But he had a great admiration for Lupica, back when Lupica started and became a big shot and still now, because Lupica could write quickly, on deadline. I think Lupica's newspaper columns have turned into self-parody, he's perhaps the only big city sports columnist left with that big kind of reputation but he's not really insightful into the inner-workings of the teams he writes about anymore. But the guy can still write a column, or two, in a short span of time and have it ready for the next day's paper. That's no easy feat, and hanging with Ziegel, who so admired that quality, made me appreciate it more.
