You know, there’s a longstanding debate (mostly taking place entirely in my brain) about whether LL Cool J is saying his “head” or his “hat” is like a shark’s fin. I am usually on the hat side. 10 seconds of googling is inconclusive. Either way, it’s a puzzling boast.

Couldn’t wait for Ms. Tutturo to exit this movie. Jaws is my all-time fav and this DBS was fun and hit on that primal fear. I found the movie “Open Water” to be very intense from that angle, as well

[4] Harlin may be a hack in that he chooses lousy, pandering scripts, but I think his actual direction – at least here, and in The Long Kiss Goodnight and Die Hard 2- is workmanlike… not exactly inspired, but solid enough.

I’ve never seen Cutthroat Island, though, so maybe I’ll have to take that back one day.

…20th Century Fox approached Harlin with science fiction/horror sequel Alien 3. After working on the trouble-prone project for a year, he left in 1990 claiming not to be satisfied with any of the multiple scripts that had been drafted and stating that he wanted to do something completely different. The next day the studio offered him rock-and-roll comedy The Adventures of Ford Fairlane starring stand-up comic Andrew Dice Clay. Studio executives were so impressed by the dailies on this film that they offered Harlin action sequel Die Hard 2 starring Bruce Willis, which he set to work on immediately. The two films were edited simultaneously and were released just a week apart after being shipped to the theaters as “wet prints”. The former flopped but the latter was another commercial success for the director….

The reason why hacks stay in the mix is mainly because:
A.) They have important friends, and
B.) They make a lot of money for the right people.

That’s a lousy lesson for budding directors like me to handle, but it’s the truth.
