i never check out or comment on "million dollar movie" posts, 'coz i'm not a movie guy (save LotR), but had to here, 'coz of the incredible soundtrack. before i saw the Joe Jackson mention, i was all excited about posting about it. good on ya for linking to it, Alex!!!

JJ is a major musical hero of mine. this record is from 1983 and is with the Night & Day band. he composed the music on the road. it was his first soundtrack and his first foray into instrumental music (2nd side only).

"Memphis," was a small hit for him and was somewhat similar to "Steppin' Out," formwise, but with a stronger groove and 'real' drums (thankfully). Joe plays saxophone and vibes on a few of these songs and is killin' it! "Moonlight" (and the instrumental "Moonlight Theme") is one of the prettiest melodies i've ever heard in my life. i've always loved it. sounds like a celeste (it isn't, but it's close and that's always a beautiful thing!).

Sue H. is kicking all kinds of percussion ass on the first two instrumental songs. a few years back, some random Russian company, released it on cd (digipak). it's totally worth finding and buying!!!

the actual disc seems tough to find right now. there's a JJ release called "Night & Day Deluxe." it's a 2cd set and contains N&D demos, live tunes from the N&D Tour and the 5 vocal tracks (side 1) from Mike's Murder sndtrk.

Even though Islands In The Stream was nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar, I think it's an overlooked George C. Scott performance.
Hemingway gave him a great blueprint to work from, but Scott was really great in this one.
