The difference will be discernable. The ovation for Joe will be louder, and more sustained than the cheers for anyone else (barring a huge surprise along the lines of Carl Pavano parachuting in, and mooning the crowd which would illicit, you know, an entirely opposite reaction). Whether anyone in the organization will admit it or not (they won’t) Joe’s been out of the Yankee family since he and the brass thumbed their noses, and grazed their chins with the back of their hands at one another, starting a cold war that somehow seems to have lasted since Koch ran the city.
This is a huge homecoming for Torre, the Steinbrothers, Cashman, and the fans. Donnie’s Donnie, but he’s never left. Book, schmook, most fans never read beyond the February headlines, and most of us who did are still trying to figure out what the big deal was. You know why? Because there was no big deal. Joe did a little venting, and some more nose-thumbing, but there was nothing shocking, or disturbing, or even surprising in the book (aside from the fact that he put it out there). Forget the book. This is the biggest pinstripped “Come to Papa” since Yogi returned with his mug held high, and his hat in his hands. Welcome home, Joe. Great to see you back in the neighborhood. While you’re here , enjoy all the hugs, and the fancy new digs, but for the love of Tanyon Sturtze keep yer hands off our bullpen, ya hear?

I think most fans are like me, they appreciate Torre and everything he did for the Yanks.

Tonight should be a hand wringing love fest, filled with honest emotion. As Torre heads into the sunset of his career, he realizes that his legacy as a player and manager will be highlighted by his years as Yankee manager. He’s always been emotional, but more so now. And there are so many side stories (like Jeter and Arod’s reaction to each other over him).

Donnie has now turned the corner of Yankee lore, a Yankee great, many degrees of separation from the current team. He will be wheeled out for the rest of his life.

[4] The book…not so great as literature but really, was it dishonest? Torre benefited from Steinbrenner and the Yankee organization and maybe some things should be kept close, but he is a rational person who had to keep the wraps on years of irrationality. I understand his desire to tell his story. And we fans have another reference to Yankee history.

Torre’s descriptions of Arod and Clemens where spot on for me, as I felt that way about them as a fan.

Should be an interesting night…I wish I was there.

I kinda think the fans really want to cheer for Joe, even with whatever hard feelings there are from that not-so-great book. The whole ceremony is bigger than all of them really, and it could be a catharsis for both Torre and the fans. I dunno, it would be great if he acknowledged that he misses New York, and it would really bring the house down if there was a hug or two involved.

But don’t count out Donnie, we still love him big time no matter where he is.

Are you sure the loudest cheers will go to Joe? I think there is some hard feelings felt by the fanbase. If this wasn’t a memorial for the Boss, I think the reception might be very muted. Perhaps the emotion of the day, however, will turn the tide.

Regardless, I still think Mattingly gets the loudest ovation.
