seriously though, I do feel the wind blowing into the Yankees faces going into these playoffs, but at the same time, I’m very much not feeling Minnesota.

i don’t know if andy’s capable of pitching on 2 days rest like that, even for a few innings. he’s been on the shelf forever..

[6] And I think that’s probably the right call. What’s the worst case scenario? Outside of losing, its the Yanks having to fly back to Minnesota for Game 5, then Hughes not pitching well. Pettitte will have last pitched on Friday, and could come in out of the bullpen, if needed. Yanks win, and CC would be ready to go in Game 1 of the ALCS, which isn’t until Friday the 15th. If Andy didn’t pitch too many innings, he’d be all set for Game 2 on Saturday the 16th. Or Burnett could pitch. =)

The only downside to this scenario is, Hughes would pitch one game at YS2.0 in the ALCS . . . but there’s a lot of ifs before we get there.

[6] Agreed… but I believe the key to the series will be winning (at least) 2 of 3 at Home. Andy is not only better at YS then Phil, but is a LH’er, which plays bigger at YS then on the road.

Doesn’t Andy have a throw day between starts? If Phil starts Game 5 and shits the bed, is it possible for Andy to throw 3 innings out of the BP?

[5] yeah there are probably several permutations and factors going into the decision.
the chess-master is also big at splitting up the lefties.
i think keeping phil out of yankee stadium and the importance of game 3 to the yankees is going to lead to a cc, phil, andy rotation.

[4] Me too. It’s so tempting to keep Hughes out of Yankee Stadium, but do they really want to limit themselves to one start from Andy?

If CC wins game one, go Hughes. If he loses game 1, go Andy. Or is that too disorienting for the pitchers to not know in advance?

interesting analysis jon.

i really can’t believe we are back to the days of 1 reliable starting pitcher followed by question marks. i really hope this does not take on the tenor of the alds’ against cleveland and detroit – al central opponents that feel like they should be beatable but their pitching does well enough and they get the necessary hits.

i’m hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst (my mother must be so proud).
