Thinking back to last year, it's amazing how much better of a ball player Gritner (106 OPS+) has tured into then Melkdud (83 OPS+). I might think that on raw talent, Melky might still have and edge, but smarts, patience and hussle play a big role in things, and on those 3 fronts, Brett excels.

They guy led the league in P/PA. It that just the perfect Yankee mold, or what?

On a number of blogs, people think Brett 'got lucky' this year, and that this will be his peak season. I don't see that. Surely, more experience will make him a better base stealer. And while he's not a kid anymore, players often get stronger into their early 30's. This being his first full year, he should certainly get more confident and smarter.

He will never be a star, but as long as his speed holds up, and he continues to be patient at the plate and play hard, I see no reason why he can't be a 105-110 OPS+ guy for some years.

I also wonder if next year, they might consider swapping his and Grady's positions. I still think Brett is a better CF'er.
