[7] The fine was $25,000 and the compensation was $200,000 to the Angels, who had asked for $2 million.

[2,3,4] Thanks. I just could not put it together. Not to be a wiseguy, but who was the compensation?

As for Azocar, I had posted something at my blog the day after his death, including the following quote from Mattingly, which was kind of amusing, but at least showed that Donnie Baseball was also having some fun playing with the kids. Of course, at that point Azocar was in the midst of a very hot stretch that lasted for the first two weeks of his promotion.

"I like this lineup now. It’s fun playing with Leyritz, Maas, Azocar and Deion. You see some serious talent there. And they’ve been impressive.” – Don Mattingly, quoted in the July 19, 1990 edition of the New Tork Times

[2] Winfield was traded before George's suspension. He started the season with the Yankees because he was adamant about not being forced out of town, going to so far to block a trade to Angels and forcing the matter into the hands of a mediator. That deal eventually went through, but not before Winfield got a nice contract extension. The irony in the whole situation was days after making the disputed trade, George promised Winfield he would be accepted back and allowed to play if the arbitrator agreed that he had the right of refusal. Because of that promise, Fay Vincent vindictively fined the Yankees for tampering on the basis that Steinbrenner's promise hurt the Angels' bargaining position. The Yankees also had to compensate the Angels as part of the ruling.

Months later, Vincent would ban George for life.

Now you be talkin Yankee baseball. Mike Blowers. Leyritz. Neon Deion. Traded for Mike Humphries. 1990. Bucky Dent managed for a bit and then the Stumper.

You George fans should check out this lineup. Wasn't he suspended from baseball for life at this time?

Wow. He sure gave us winners. Dave Eiland and Dave Rhigetti threw for this team. Yeh. The Steve Sax syndrome (he didn't have it with the Yanks). Kevin Maas, what happened to him? And Luis Polonia, ending the first of three appearances as a Yank. We know about the underage girl, but how did he keep coming back.

My memory really goes back to Dave Winfield leaving after a few games, but I cannot put my bat on the circumstances, though I know about Spira and the whole mess. But why did he start the season with NY and then leave.

Oscar Azocar wore a Yankee uniform and played in Yankee Stadium. It doesn't matter how good or bad those teams were at the time, he was Yankee. That is so special. Now he playing with the Mick, Joe D, Casey, Roger, and the rest in Yankee heaven.
