[10] Oh, you’re right, “Day in the Life” is a Paul/John song, not a Paul song. Okay. My preference is for the better-orchestrated “Eleanor Rigby”. (I don’t like to say it, but the very best Beatles songs are the ones where somebody other than the Beatles play the instruments.)

They’re both great songs, obviously. “Day in the Life,” though, I’d count as more of a John song, in that it’s John’s bits that are truly haunting. But I’d call that the perfect Lennon-McCartney song, probably the Beatles’ masterpiece. “Eleanor Rigby” is up there with “For No One,” but somehow the latter is just a tad more poignant, more aching, more perfect. Of course, talking about this is like talking about, who’s better, Gibson or Koufax? You really can’t go wrong. Which, of course, is why they’re called the Beatles.

Fabulous choice, Alex, “For No One.” It’s Paul’s masterpiece among masterpieces, if you ask me, and off their album that for my money is their masterpiece among masterpieces (Abbey Road being a close second or perhaps even dead tie).

[2] Me too, particularly for the discount. I compared their numbers today and Crawford steals more bases, but that’s it. If he continues his lifetime .337 On-Base percentage (.301 at Fenway) then it’s like flushing money down the toilet.
