Tampa may be a bit weaker without Crawford, but Boston will be better and I’m not going to misunderestimate Toronto. And Showalter will have the Orioles playing better too.

[9] Do they? They lost most of the bullpen and the rotation wasn’t great in 2010. Shields made AJ Burnett look like Roy Halladay, and Niemann and Davis both struggled in the second half and ended up below league average. Even Garza barely finished with an ERA+ over 100. Tampa’s rotation is heavily dependent on Price.

[4] The Red Sox binge may have strengthened their chances in the AL East, but it has also made it easier for the Yankees to win the WC (especially with Lee and Werth going/staying in the NL). If the Yankees can get in the playoffs, a healthy CC could be enough with just a little help from Hughes and Burnett (and certainly Andy if he returned).

As things stand, I think 90-92 looks like the WC number.

I don’t think the significance of not getting Lee has been fully appreciated. That turn of events has made Pettitte an absolute necessity, even though he isn’t likely to throw much more than 160-170 innings. If he pitched anything like last season, that would be more than enough to hold down the fort until either a midseason deal is made or AJ Burnett, Nova or someone proves they can be productive. Without him, however, there will be a huge void that takes the Yankees from at least WC favorites to one of pack of viable contenders.

It is what it is. I really don’t think they can win without him. I’m not sure they can win with him, for that matter, but you do what you have to do.
