I shall submit this little forgotten gem. May 5, 2000, Orioles (always seems to be them) vs Yanks at the Stadium. A Friday night. Yanks go into the 9th trailing 10-8 in a wild game where El Duque got torched for 7 runs in 4 innings, and Ripken, Baines, and Bernie have already homered. O'Neill hits a solo jack off of Timlin to pull within 10-9. A Bernie single brings in BJ Ryan who promptly walks Tino bringing up Posada who some people had questioned if he could handle starting duties with Girardi gone coming into the season. First pitch...bomb to LF. Ballgame. I woke up my parents as I screamed bloody murder in the basement...thats one hell of a Friday night when you're not old enough to drive or buy beer yet.

[20] At the very least, not adhering so strictly to the "championship or bust" mantra probably would've prevented several of the dumb moves that happened in the 80's, as cooler heads would've prevailed.

[7] Right on - the 98 Benitez fight is absolutely my pick.

You could see that team anneal right there as it happened, and look where they went the rest of the season. It contained camaraderie, fire, and one of those "he just became a True Yankee (TM) in front of our eyes" moments -- speaking of course of Graeme Lloyd and his dash from the bullpen to start throwing punches.

I've never been able to find good footage online, and I'm left wondering if MLB suppresses brawl videos. I'm not a violent guy, but I think people in general (and MLB officialdom in particular) are too squeamish about baseball fights.

[15] I don't see it as redefining success as much as tracing success into surrounding seasons and taking pleasure in failure when necessary. The entire Don Mattingly era could be construed as a joyless slog if viewed only thorugh titles. But for a lot of us, it's the very foundation of our fandom.

[17] I was at Gooden's no hitter too. I wasn't going to back out last minute, but to motivate me, a friend called and kept repeating the lovely chant the Stadium bleachers always had for Jay Buhner.

I have a few audio games (surprisingly, you can find a good amount on line for free or small subscriptions), but what I really enjoy are a few audio tapes with post game shows from the mid-1980s.

[9] I was also at Cone's perfect game. Made it to Gooden's no hitter too. The beanie baby craze is what kept me from attending Wells' perfect game.

[10] There used to be a guy in Thornwood, NY that had audio broadcasts, but I lost touch with him. Tape trading was big in the early 90's. I used to get links from Usenet groups back in the day.

[12] He got a haircut.

As for actually nominating a game, I was at the Stadium for Ricky Ledee's inside the park homerun. That was fun

I'm never going to stop being a fan. I'm also never going to find anything short of a world title a success. I've always felt that if fans start lowering the bar, it gives management an excuse to do the same.

My game is Aug 4, 1993 vs Toronto.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA199308040.shtml

During Mike Stanley's AB in the 6th with 2 on and 2 out, the stadium stood and cheered with an energy I'd only seen on old 70's Yanks highlights. Stanley launched one that Devon White pulled back in the park over the 399 sign. That moment has always stuck with me, finally seeing life in the stadium and seeing the team compete with the best.

[7] That fight was great, Benitez was a classic villain.

I love this site, and this is my first post, even though I've been reading for years.

[10] I've gotten some from Ebay, but most from random google searches. If you look hard enough you can turn up someone with games to either sell or trade. Some have very elaborate websites with impressive inventories, but you have to make sure you aren't getting DVD copies of games rebroadcast on MLB and YES, for example.

[7] Loved that game and especially the brawl, with Girardi leading a tidal wave of Yanks against Benitez after he gestured at them to come, then seeing Strawberry clobber him in slow-mo closeups... to me, that's when they officially stamped "juggernaut" on baseball's' behinds.

[6] I had the Cone game on the radio while playing softball. I can remember being glad they didn't leave him in to pitch a no hitter because I would have never forgiven myself if I had missed. Unfortunately, I wound up missing Cone's perfect game in 1999 because I was driving down to Baltimore to see the Mets plays the Orioles. When I found out the news, it felt like someone had died.

I was also at the Irabu game and there definitely was a big buzz in the crowd. It might seem silly now, but Irabu's debut was big news at the time.

First off, count me in the camp that does not take the regular season lightly. My biggest disappointment last season was falling short of the Rays in the division, not losing to Texas.

I remember Mariano's debut vividly because the Yankees were really scuffling for pitching and Rivera's performance was a godsend, especially after how poorly he performed in his first stint.

[5] I saw that game in an Emergency Room. My family went to Great Adventure, but my sister wound up falling and cutting her chin. While she got stitches, I got to see the game instead of listening on the Sony walkman I had brought with me.

My all-time favorite game was against the Twins on May 13, 1985. Behind Eddie Lee Whitson, the Yankees fell behind 8-0 early on, but then chipped away. In the ninth, Mattingly hit a walk off three-run blast to win the game 9-8. About five years ago, I found someone on the internet who had taped the game, with commercials, and converted it to DVD. It is now the most cherished game in my collection of classics, which includes just about every ASG since 1968.

great nominations for lost classics. they are going in the queue. i also am remembering the game vs baltimore in early 1998 where benitez drilled tino and then raines and bernie went back to back after the brawl. or is that one already on YES?

“The scouting report we had said that he throws about 85 or 86,” White Sox outfielder Dave Martinez said. “He was throwing a lot harder than that.”

Gene Michael had mentioned that Rivera's uptick in velocity was one of the reasons he got the call again; all of a sudden he was throwing mid 90's. IIRC it was during Rivera's Yankeeography.

As for the youth movement, it was widely understood that the Yankees preferred veteran players. For all the talk of the "core four" the Yankees were for the most part players in free agency, even during their rebuilding period; Boggs, Tartabull, Spike Owen, Mike Gallego, Tony Fernandez, Strawberry, Polonia, Dion James, etc, were all signed as free agents.

One other thing; before Chamberlain-Hughes-Kennedy, there was Taylor-Johnson-Kamieniecki.

As for regular season games that stuck with me, I remember the Yankees sweeping a doubleheader from the Indians at the Jake in 1996. They started Brian Boehringer and Ramiro Mendoza, who up to that point really hadn't done much of anything of note. I also remember Cone's return from surgery, shutting down the A's in Oakland. For some reason, Ricky Bones' time in pinstripes seems to stick with me, as well as the circumstances that brought him to NY. Hideki Irabu's debut against the Tigers I attended, I thought it was pretty cool that the Yanks were able to get the "Japanese Nolan Ryan." It was a big deal at the time.

4) I didn't have a TV that year so I missed this game. Great write up, though Jon. I'd nominate the game back in 85 I think when Griffey the Senior went into the left field stands and robbed a Red Sox of a homer.
