Posada is on board with the plan: “I’m going to keep thinking as a D.H., keep working as a D.H. and preparing for the games as a D.H.,” Posada said. “If I start catching in games, it’s not going to help me. I need to concentrate on being a D.H., because if I start catching, then I won’t be able to put it away. I know I can still catch. But I’m not thinking as a catcher anymore.” - NYT 3/1/11

Girardi has said they'll let Posada catch some bullpen sessions to keep up his skills in the same NYT piece. He also mentioned Posada's versatility for NL interleague games so I don't think not catching in Florida is a big deal. Spring training games are exhibitions anyway. If Posada catches the odd bullpen session, it keeps the 3rd catcher option open the same as 3 innings behind the plate at Steinbrenner Field.

Ken, I'm not saying that Posada should be the regular catcher, but rather that they should simply keep him available to play that position--on occasion. With teams carrying so many pitchers, the more versatile that your position players can be the better.

It hardly seems like worst case scenario thinking to me. Posada is a 39 year old catcher and has lost a lot of time to various injuries the past two years. I think expecting him to hold up for another year behind the plate would be optimistic to the point of foolishness. There's a very good chance that keeping him at DH full time will keep him healthy and productive through the last year of his contract.

Yeah I'll defer to their wisdom in this matter. Maybe they're sometimes over-cautious but I don't know why they would do this if there wasn't a reason.

i think the concern over po's repeated concussions is why they are not even thinking about him behind the plate.

I really, really hate Girardi's bizarre obsession with over resting his players, but I suppose its unavoidable and I'd rather Posada playing first than some AAAA scrub.
