Also, the website looks fantastic. Sorry I failed to mention that before. Thanks for all you do Alex. And thanks to all the other great contributors on this site. I don't go a day without seeing what's up at the Banter.

3) Thanks for the comment. I know Pat and his wife Susie find the south to be gracious, welcoming, and convivial now.

I was born and raised in Travelers Rest, SC, about an hour or so from Abbeville. I remember driving through there as a kid, looking up at those palatial homes and visions of "Gone With the Wind" or some other antebellum archetype would flood my mind. I think it's rather interesting that even though I grew up rather close to Abbeville my reaction to the town was probably not unlike that of Pat Jordan. The place was as foreign to me as it was to him. And though it doesn't play as well in the national media, even in the Old South, "The young’uns don’t see color much no more.” When I attended graduate school in New York I had to constantly answer questions about the racism I so obviously witnessed in my every day life. The misconceptions about the South are so embedded that it's almost easier to play the part than to detail the nuance of everyday life down here. I feel like the truth, with it's messy details and counterparts, would just dissapoint the listener.

I was at my barber's last night, a Spanish place on 231st Street, just as the game was starting. My barber turned my chair so I could look at the TV as he was working. Now, that's a little slice of heaven.

Nice essay.

Reminds me a bit of the place I'd get my haircut in college- Puffenbarger's. 2 or 3 old, old barbers, not sure which one was Mr. P.

7 bucks got you the only haircut they gave- the High & Tight, as well as unlimited access to nonstop Redskins talk. I'd keep my mouth shut til they were done with my head, then remind them I was a Giants fan, at which point one of them would always say something like, "If I'da known that I'da taken off one of your eyebrows."
