I'm proud to say that I have been John Schulian's friend for more than 40 years. We met at the age of about 14, when we played on the same Cops League baseball team, then played baseball together through high school and into college. We shared great times together as pals in a variety of ways, which I'll never forget. No finer gentleman and friend walks the earth today, and all of the success he has experienced in his life is well-deserved. God bless you, John.
Your Friend Forever, Steve

Bunch of good writers came out of the sports department in the 70s. Dave Kindred is the same age as John, though he was around earlier. Bob Ryan and Peter Gammons are from that generation too.

Yeah, it is quite a journey. I'm honored that he told it to me and is letting me run it here. I think of this as the ultimate Bronx Banter interview though John did all of the work so it's more of a memoir than a Q&A. I just egged him on.

[1] I think most of them want you to think that it was a combination of destiny and superhuman or supernatural forces that brought them to the level of prominence they have, which I only believe one out of a thousand might be true. But none of them are overnight sensations; some are either more honest or more prepared to open themselves up to us than most. In retrospect it may seem like a person was destined to a certain fate, but it never feels that way along the way, no matter how confident you are...

I can relate to a lot of that. Ironically it wasn't until we moved to Dutchess County and stayed there for twenty years that I feel like I developed anti-social tendencies, or at least the tools he mentioned above. My painful departure and even more painful redevelopment as a New Yorker kinda helped me a lot in dealing with people as a human being on my terms, which are not all that bad to be honest. Looking forward to more of this story...

Many times I read profiles of famously successful people with a totally focused ambitions that kind of make me feel inadequate, or at least make their stories inaccessible to me. It struck me that John Schulian wasn't driven by superhuman forces. Dedicated, hard-working, I'm sure, but in a more relatable way for me. Looking forward to learning how he gets to Xena! (though our house is a Buffy house)
