Hank, did not realize that Mike Witt threw out one of the pitches this weekend. Now there's a Yankee from an awful era! I used to call him Mike "Half" Witt.

Chance was an interesting character. He was Bo Belinsky's running mate in the Hollywood fast lane. He also didn't like pitching for the non-contending Angels so he used to make up trade rumors that had him heading out of town. I think he hoped that the Angels would hear the rumor, consider it a good deal, and then try to pull it off with another team.

After his playing days, Chance became a boxing promoter and manager. He was Ernie Shavers' manager at one point. Later on, Chance joined a traveling carnival, of all things!

Nice write-up. I have to hand it to the Angels -- their idea to have 81 different ex-Angels throw out the first pitches of each home game is a pretty good one, and they even seem to have put it together with the opposition in mind. This weekend against the Bombers they had two ex-Yanks (Mike Witt and Jim Abbott) and another guy (Dean Chance) who dominated the 1964 Yanks, going 4-0 that year in five starts, allowing just one run over 50 innings for an ERA of 0.18. The most interesting about that season was that his one no-decision against the Yanks came in a game almost exactly 47 years ago when he threw fourteen scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks, but it wasn't good enough. Jim Bouton threw 13 innings for the Yankees, and they ended up winning 2-0 when Elston Howard doubled in two runs in the 15th.
