Hughes is coming off of an injury, Nova has an innings ceiling, Garcia is held together with duct tape, and AJ is not going to the pen = six man rotation.

CC had knee surgery last winter, Colon weighs 900 lbs. An extra day of rest won’t kill the whales.

[11] True, but in that case there is really no benefit in going to a six man rotation to begin with. Simply stow one of the six in the pen or, in the case of Nova, in AAA where he can pitch regularly. Keep everyone on regular rest and rotation, and wait for the inevitable breakdown.

[6] Yes, a six man rotation is a bad idea because it means more starts by bad starters and, yes, the pitchers’ rhythm and routine does seem to matter. Do I prefer that Nova is demoted? Of course not. But that is what is going to happen. In fact:

[5] I don’t get it. Your guys having to “deal with” an extra day of rest down the stretch is a bad thing? “Rhythm” ‘is that important? The missed starts by CC I can see. But no value to having Nova continue to develop in MLB? Or to continuing to ride whatever’s come over Freddy?

I think we all agree Meatray is a waste.

[4] If there is a six man staff, he is still wasted cash, because as a six man rotation is silly (I agree with [0]).

But I doubt that the team will go with six starters. Rather, Nova will be sent down because he has options.

Nova has to be the odd man out. I’m a big fan of his, but he’s clearly the least good pitcher not making 8 figures. I’m pretty ambivalent between just optioning him to AAA (poor kid!) an keeping him in the pen. Guess that depends on how long you think bart and sweaty will hold up and if Hughes will be good.

Saying Mitre’s better than Buddy Carlyle, isn’t that damning with faint praise?

What does he offer that Carlyle, Wade, Ayala, etc don’t or can’t? With Nova, Garcia or Colon going to the pen when Hughes gets back, Mitre’s redundant.
