My old man was an alcoholic so I'm familiar with the romance of bars and stories. I was influenced by that for a long time. But now I think you've got to be drunk to tell a good one and even drunker to think it's hilarious.

Lot's of fun to read, but I wish he included the lyrics to "Hark the Herald Tribune".

I've always found it odd how often writers romanticize about alcohol, but I guess that's because I am not a drinker. I wonder how many of the stories are an exaggeration though? Regardless, the tales of excessive drinking seem to be more about loneliness than anything else, which I guess is to be expected from people who spend so much time with their own words.

That is a classic line from Smith. My old man would have appreciated that one.
