[5] Yep, that seems right to me, too.

As far as I’m concerned, the aim is to win the WS. Everything else is just instrumental. Winning the division gives you a slightly better chance of advancing to the WS, but I wouldn’t mortgage the farm to do it, for sure.

However: Ubaldo Jimenez is signed through 2012, with club options for two more years. That makes him a very valuable acquisition. I might part with serious prospectage to get him.

I still think they played it right down the stretch last year, even if it was a chore to watch. Playing Minnesota gave them the best chance of advancing, and therefore the best chance of winning the World Series.

The difference in the ALCS wasn’t home field, seeing as how they went 1-2 in their home games, it was Phil Hughes crapping the bed twice and Cliff Lee being Cliff Lee.

[1] I wonder what his answer would be. The Yanks played great against Minnesota with all that rest and Yankee Stadium did nothing for them in the ALCS.

But it was awful to watch down the stretch and it sucked to lose the division when it all came down.

Follow up – Do you think the Yankees would have beat Texas in a five gamer last year?
