Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman debuted in February 1949. It was still playing on Broadway when this piece was written. Heinz had to know his title would sound similar to at least some of his readers.

Heinz was a war correspondent for the New York Sun. He'd written many columns by the time he got to this one. They were all written with the same approach, the same dedication to telling the story. Maybe not all of them were great, that's to be expected. But this piece didn't drop out of the sky. It wasn't a great scoop. It's just a beautifully crafted story. And it came about because of everything that came before it, the hard work and effort Heinz put into his writing. It is a pearl. And it more than holds up.

It is inspiring and humbling.
