"Still, it makes me wonder about the cost of making fun of people who have obvious, even blatant weaknesses. Irabu does not seem to have been a bad guy, but simply a lazy one; he deserved a little less cruelty than what the fans and media, including me, gave him."

Yeah, for a long time now I've lost any desire to make fun of people for their weaknesses. We all have them.

Unless it's something like poking fun at Varitek for the low caught stealing %. But he's still a better ball player than I am.

These remind me of the case of Donnie Moore, onetime All-Star closer for the Angels. His suicide was another sad case. I thought at one time it had to do with his blow-up in the '86 ALCS against Boston, but his end didn't come until 1989. Unstable and depressive, he had recently been cut by the Royals. Regrettably, his family was involved in his end as well. His wife and daughter survived their wounds, but his sons witnessed his suicide by gunshot.

"A little less cruelty," yes, perhaps even no cruelty at all.

I try to remind myself to tell my kids that the worst major leaguer is still one of the best baseball players in the world. [To be consistent with the previous sentence, I will omit any reference to a MLB player of my choice who does not qualify as one of the best in the world.]
