And people say there's a better sport than baseball. Bah!

[3] There's a little less "end of the universe glumness" than there was in 2003. I have heard "They didn't deserve it and besides, the B's start next week!" or some variation thereof more times than I can count this morning.

Still, all the talk about how Francona MUST be fired is rather interesting. Its all amusing to watch. Sox fans have not forgotten how to be Sox fans after all.

I don't like being swept by the Rays on the last series of the year. a Boston-Rays playoff with a Rays victory would have been a nicer way to send the Deadsox into the long winter.

[41] Joe left Proctor in because his only alternatives were Mo, So, and D-Rob, and those guys have to be fully rested when Detroit comes to town. He definitely was not throwing the game, but he wasn't going to harm the Yankees' chances in games that matter just to make things sporting. Good for Joe.

When I was watching highlights of the Orioles' win, I noticed how they celebrated like they had won the World Series. I could not help, but think how pathetic that was even as I was laughing my butt off.

This time, rbj, it wasn't really Proctor's fault. Girardi left him in there like it was The Alamo and he was noble in defeat. I got the impression tho that Joe was deliberately trying to throw the game given Proctor's proclivity for blowing leads when handed to him, but got exposed by his unexpected effectiveness. Not that anyone was looking because the Ded Sox lost, but still I'd hate for my team to be that vindictive if it were true. Would've liked to see TB and Boston settle it btw themselves, because the Yanks have to go in thinking they'll annihilate anyone in their way. I just don't see that right now.

Simone, there are no Twins to beat down; life beat them down by mid-season. We'll have to settle for Detroit, and by settle I mean I hope Leyland keeps his promise and pitches Vermangler once and only once.

I think a playoff collapse (uch, 2004) is worse than a skid that knocks you out of the playoffs.
I mean, I suppose it's better to have made the playoffs, but to drop the series like we did... man, I don't think there's anything worse than that.
But I'm pleased to see the Sox out of it. They do suck.
I said at the start of the season that the Yanks and Rays would make the playoffs. I wasn't confident about our pitching, but I just thought we'd be better than the rest, and we were by a few games.
This team has some fight in it. That's a good thing.
We've got a fighter's chance of winning #28. It's a very good day.

Wait, what happened? Yankees up 7-0, no life in the Rays, so I switch back and forth with Mythbusters, then go to bed and what the hell happens?

Though of course I did predict Proctor would spit the bit. Not yet time for schadenfreude, I'm still trying to figure out what happened.

I confess to falling asleep in the Yankees/Rays 9th inning so I woke up this morning to the shocking news of the Yankees and Red Sox losses.

Schadenfreude all the way, baby! I'll never forget the obnoxious glee of the Red Sox fans when the Yankees collapsed in the 2004 ALCS. I don't think that this collapse is as painful, but I take joy in the suffering of the Red Sox fans this time around.

So the Yankees play Detroit next. I'll miss the usual Twins ALDS beat down.

Let's go, Yankees!

You all know that I rather traditional when it comes to baseball. I don't like the wild card, and I certainly don't approve of expanding the wild card next season. That said, these last few games may have changed my mind. I mean, if the greatest team since the 1927 Yankees fails to make the playoffs, then there is a problem with the system, right?
